Freiburg Galleries - A Palette of Contemporary Art PDF Print E-mail

In addition to the Museum of Modern Art, in and around the Freiburg city centre there are numerous private galleries, public and municipal institutions and foundations which provide an opportunity to visit high quality exhibits throughout the year.

The Kunstverein Freiburg (Freiburg Art Society), founded in 1827, attracts attention well outside the region with its emphasis on the latest trends in contemporary art.  It also deals with questions regarding conditions and procurement.

Since 1997, the society has had the use of a generous exhibition hall in the former Marienbad in Dreisamstrasse.

In the Freiburg E-Werk - Hallen fuer Kunst (Freiburg E-Werk - art halls), where roughly 30 visual artists have their studios, the proximity presentation and production makes its mark on the variety of interdisciplinary art forms and actions taking place at one venue. Production and presentation also go perfectly hand-in-hand in the municipal Kunsthaus L6 (House of Art) which was opened for the first time in October 2004.  The house's 1200 square meters include a large exhibition hall for the presentation and promotion of  contemporary regional art, a new workshop for the former Kuenstlerwerkstatt Mehlwagge (Mehlwagge Artists' Workshop) (now called the Kuenstlerwerkstatt Kunsthaus L6 - The house of arts artists' workshop) as well as ten studios fir artists, eight rehearsal rooms for Freiburg bands and a studio apartment for visiting international artists. The Franz Armin Morat collection, which can be viewed at the renowned Morat Institut fuer Kunst und Kunstwissenschaft (Morat Institute of art and art studies) alongside alternating exhibits, houses more than 10,000 excellent examples of various eras.

Yet another important private collection is the Rosskopf Collection in the Alexander Buerkle Art Room.

The Centre Culturel Francais (French Cultural Centre) showcases contemporary French art, and the Kunst- und Rahmenhandlung Springmann (Springmann art and frames), the Galerie am Colombi and the Stiftung fuer Konkrete Kunst, Roland Phleps, also stage regular and varied art exhibitions.

Galerien Baumgarten, Ruta Correa, G, pro arte, Foth and Skulpturen-Kabinett present their committed programme of a wide variety of the most recent national and international art at www.freiburg-galerien.de . Together with numerious other exhibition sites, they publish a quarterly informational sheet and organise joint events that promote mediation of contemporary art.  An example of these events is the "nocturne", which takes place during the "Muenstersommer" Festival in Freiburg.
