Today Freiburg, the economic and cultural center on the Oberrhein, today has something like 204.000 citizens and is the only major city in Baden-Württemberg with a constantly rising number of inhabitants.

The region around Freiburg represents the third great area of economic boom in Baden-Württemberg with the region around Stuttgart and north Baden taking the lead. As far as economic- and Structural-policies are concerned, Freiburg is aiming for a middle ground that helps to preserve the cities and unique flair while allowing a sustainable economic development. Freiburg today is setting itself high aims: it strives to strike a balance between ecology and economy, tries to provide cultural highlights in co-operation with its institutes of higher education and the university, and finally tries to establish transnational partnerships across the neighboring borders of France and Switzerland.
