Formerly called "PapalaPub" and recently rennovated der Bettelstudent (the beggar student) turned into Freiburg's newest Student hotspot. From the owners of Café Atlantik and Subway (now called Glamour), der Bettelstudent is the latest offering.
Located in the vicinity of the backstreets behind the university library, der Bettelstudent is perhaps a little off the beaten track for a lot of night-time drinkers although it must be said, if you do manage to find the place, you wont be disappointed.

I ordered a large pilsner lager which cost €2.40 - cheaper than anywhere else in the city centre as far as I know. Also, I heard recommendations about the food, although I ddn't manage to sample. One such food offer is the Schnitzeltag (schnitzel day) where various art of schnitzel are on offer - such as the cheapest at €2.90. That gets you amazingly two schnitzels in bread. The lunch menu is always €4.90 and consists of a soup of the day, main course and a salad.
Everyday one can find different special offers on top of the usual cheap prices.
On weekends the pub is packed out - according to the barman I spoke with. I was there on a Sunday evening and even though Sundays are normally quiet in Freiburg, der Bettelstudent was reasonably full.
Opening hours:
- Monday to Friday: 12:00 to 14:00 (midday food menu), 18:00 to 02:00
- Saturday: 12:00 to 03:00 right through and showing live Bundesliga football when it's on TV
- Sunday: 14:00 to 01:00 right through, showing SC Freiburg when they play.
- Food until 01:30 (Friday and Saturday until 02:30)

- Monday - Club sound, Kölschtag - Cologne beer day.
- Tuesday - Mixed music - offers on weizen beer, freiburger pils and showing the Champions league on TV if it's a match day.
- Wednesday - UK Hits night - offers on Caiphi and again showing champions league on TV if it's a match day
- Thursday - Rock classics night and Alternative music with crossover - offers on Whiskey and coke and Ganter pilsner lager. UEFA cup on TV if it's a match day
- Friday - 90's night - Tequila on offer with Vodka Redbull also cheaper than usual
- Saturday - 70's and 80's night - offers for longdrink shots, rum and coke, vodka lemon, gin and tonic, whiskey and coke.
- Sunday - Relaxed night - Schnitzel day - SC Freiburg on TV if it's match day
