 The forest restaurant at St. Ottilien is located quite a fair walk / drive out of the city centre of Freiburg, accessible by either foot or car. On foot, it is possible to take a pleasant walk from Schlossberg's peak around the forest via the footpaths, not a short walk but pleasant on a sunny or dry day.
By car, one needs to follow the Kartäuserstrasse from the city centre and follow the signs from a relatively hidden left turn, up the hill in a zig-zag formation - the way is signposted all the way but at night one should drive slowly as the route has several sharp bends and is completely unlit.
The restaurant has a lot of history behind it and is also the location of a chapel. The food is local in terms of cuisine style and look-out for the special 'Wildkarte' menu (wild animal menu) in the Autumn and Winter seasons as their venison and wildboar dishes are fantastic.
In the summer time, sit outside at one of the many tables looking out into the black forest and enjoy the view and if it's raining, an outdoor marquee is available for extra seating. |

St. Valentin is a forest restaurant situated near Guenterstal - MAP (Adobe PDF).
A fantastic place to end a summer walk in the forest and a warm enviting place to escape the winter cold.
We had a Christmas office party at St. Valentin and the service was excellent, even the mulled wine reception around a roaring fire at the entrance was an amazing spectacle, especially since it had just got dark and the snow had started to fall... magical.
The food menu is also great, take a special note of the Wildkarte (wild animal menu) in autumn and winter, especially the venison.
My only gripe is that it is not possible to park directly in front of the restaurant and you have to take a walk up a hill from the car park, a few hundred metres. In Winter this can be a little dark as there are no lampposts lighting your way. |

Toscana Firenze is an Italian restaurant situated on the edge of the city centre, near the Siegesdenkmal in Friedrichring. In former times the restaurant was two separated restaurants virtually side-by-side and they have simply knocked through the wall to create one giant restaurant. There are 220 seats and the staff claim that they can cope with groups of up to 100 people at any one time, so ideal for bus and coach tours. |

This traditional inn looks back on a long history - it was first mentioned in 1680. It is located in a quiet rural suburb in the East of Freiburg very close to the Dreisam river. It has a large beergarden and there are tall trees providing shadow. Very cosy dining rooms. Service was excellent, food outstanding. Better make reservations for dinner as they do get somewhat busy.
I opted for the three-course menu – free choices from the menu list of course! A Cremant d’Alsace with orange juice as aperitif. Not ordered, and not charged came brioche, ricotta and olives. |

 By most accounts, this is the longest continuously-run inn in Germany, in business since 1403. Peter Hansen, the Bären's 50th documented innkeeper, has greeted guests with his wife Monika since 1980.
Today, there are 25 guestrooms and the dining area is bright and cheerful with a dash of elegance.
The 250-year-old lime tree, the fountain and in front of the Schwabentor the hotel Zum Roten Bären since 1120 and therefore the oldest inn in Germany. Hospitality is a matter of course for us - you will feel it everywhere!
Ingredients are fresh, and the dishes are exquisitely prepared. The Bären employs its own herb professional, who grows them in the garden of a former monastery. This allows chefs (and guests) to try unique and subtle flavorings. |
