The Waldrestaurant Zähringer Burg (Forest restaurant Zähringer Castle) is a pretty little restaurant located near the top of the rolling hills of Zähringen, a few hundred metres walk down from the 'Zähringer Burg' castle.
The restaurant is very popular with the locals and it is probably a good idea to reserve a table before making the journey.
The route up to the restaurant is very picturesque and involves snaking through forest covered hills catching an occasional glimpse of spectacular views of Freiburg whilst doing so.
Parking can be quite tight when the restaurant is busy so many guests park in an overspill car park at the brow of the hill, shortly before the inclined road declines downhill, only around 70 metres from the restaurant.
The route to the entrance from the main car park is very steep so wheelchair bound visitors are advised against eating here. I managed to push my son in a pram up the steep hill but found the route back down quite a struggle.
The restaurant can seat up to 70 diners comfortably inside and a further 100 or so outside when the weather is nice, during the daytime. Tilted seats outside mean that there is no waitress service at that time so pay attention before getting too comfortable. The website for the restaurant claims that 220 people can be seated outside but I personally find that a challenge that I'd like to see.
The staff are very friendly and a few can speak very good English. They seem to take pride in their work, something I really miss at other places.
Toilets are down a steep flight of stairs at the back of the restaurant, again not suitable for disabled visitors or small children.
At the front entrance a small field holds a sand pit, climbing frame and a somewhat dangerous slide for children. Keep an eye on the little ones should they decide to try out the slide as the quick-to-descend ride ends with a 30cm or more drop onto the ground. My son injured his back, albeit not badly, whilst sliding. The biggest hit for my kids is always the two trampolines next to the restaurant.
The castle is only 8 minutes walk from the restaurant. There one can enjoy the incredible panoramic view of the Kandel, Freiburg, the Black Forest, the Rhine plain and the Vosges. The tower is often locked so before trecking up the hill, ask the waiting staff if the tower is open. They will give you a key when it is not already open to the public. Lots of steps inside the tower but worth the climb.
Menu can be found here: http://www.waldrestaurant-zaehringerburg.de/en/speisekarte/tageskarte.html
Their specialty dishes are Swiss-style fondues (such as cheese, meat and fish fondues) and have a further main meal menu with all the standard local dishes. Not being a fan of fondue I cannot comment on the quality although one has to only notice a fondue set on almost every table, that says something!
Tuesday and Wednesday evenings are accompanied by a Jazz Pianist, quite relaxing!

Waldrestaurant Zähringer Burg
Reutebacher Höfe 7
79104 Freiburg im Breisgau
Directions from Freiburg's city centre
Direction Zähringen: Habsburger Straße.
Zähringer Straße: follow the tram line number 2 until the final stop.
After the final stop, turn right into the Reutebachgasse.
In front of the railway underpass, turn left into Wildtalstraße and then right into Pochgasse.
Drive uphill through the residential area and then three more kilometers through the forest until a signpost indicates a left turn steeply down hill. Vehicles with large wheel bases should park at the top of the hill and not attempt to drive down to the restaurant car park due to the sudden drop in the road resulting in grounding.
