We often visit the Waldkirch Schwarzwald (Black Forest) Zoo in summer, partly due to the fact that it lies in the shade of the forest further up the hill. That said, we once visited with a pram and that was a big mistake, this place is absolutely pram-unfriendly thanks to it's steep incline and many steps.
Lots of animals for the kids to see, and many of interest to the adults too. It's possible to enter some enclosures and pet them too, something my kids always enjoy doing.
My two always enjoyed gawping at the owls, kangaroos, deer, rabbits, goats and bears, just a small selection of what's to offer.
The zoo is open from
April to September from 9am til 6pm,
March, October and November from 9am til 5pm
and closed from December til the end of February.
Entrance price is very reasonable compared to other local attractions. Small children get in for free, 1.50 Euro for kids over 6 years of age and adults pay 3 Euro each to enter.
There are not that many places where two adults and two kids can enjoy an entire afternoon for less than ten Euro!
Waldkirch is reachable by train via the 'Regionalbahn' and it takes around 20 minutes from Freiburg to Waldkirch. Upon arrival at Waldkirch train station, signposts direct the way to the zoo and a leisurely 15 minute walk brings you to the zoo.
Going by car is also easy, simply head north from Freiburg via the B294 and get off the dual carriageway at the exit "Waldkirch Mitte". Drive towards Waldkirch itself and after the second crossroads, turn right. The zoo is signposted at this point.
