EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg can be accessed from both France and Switzerland. Visitors from Germany generally access the airport via France.

Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg is the only airport in the world operated jointly by two countries, France and Switzerland.

 Here's some fast facts:

• Contrary to popular belief, the airport is located completely on French soil, but is operated on an agreement established in 1946 where both Switzerland and France are granted duty-free access to the airport.
• The airport itself is split into two architecturally independent halves, one half serving the French side (today considered the Schengen side) and the other half serving the Swiss side; there is a customs point at the middle of the airport so that people can "emigrate" to the other side of the airport.
• The "finger dock" which provides access to the aircraft is in a joint international zone into which all passengers emigrate before they board the plane.
• Due to the complicated diplomatic structure of the airport, it has three airport codes: BSL (BaSeL) is the Swiss code, while MLH (MuLHouse) is the French code and EAP (EuroAirPort) is the international code.
  • Due to its unique international status, EuroAirport has three airport codes: BSL (Basel) is the Swiss code, while MLH (Mulhouse) is the French code and EAP (EuroAirport) is the international code. This three code status often results in some interesting effects - including price differences between fares offered to or from one airport code or the other, and tickets which are built of 'connections' and therefore 'non-stop'. For example, an Air France flight from MLH - CDG may be cheaper than one from BSL - CDG; and the flight from BSL - CDG will actually be ticketed as with a 'stop-over' in MLH, then consisting of two legs, a non-existent BSL - MLH one, and a flown MLH - CDG one.  

How to get there

• Coming from Freiburg, the airport can be reached via motorway A5 (Karlsruhe - Freiburg - Basel), either from motorway junction Neuenburg via Ottmarsheim/Mulhouse, from motorway A35, or by taking the exit Palmrheinbücke, Huningue and St. Louis just before the motorway customs Basel.
• Alternatively, the airport can easily be reached by train (destination stations: Basel Bahnhof SBB, Basel Badischer Bahnhof, Basel Bahnhof SNCF and Mulhouse Gare SNCF) or bus (from the above stations and Freiburg coach stations).

Car Rental

• Autopôle, Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, National Citer and Sixt all have offices on the second floor of both sectors, except Autopôle, which is situated on the first floor.

Taxi:

• Taxi: Taxi stands are located in front of the Arrivals hall, both on the French and Swiss side.
• The main companies on the Swiss side are Taxi Zentrale (tel: (0)612 222 222) and 33 Taxi (tel: (0)613 333 333).
• The main taxis on the French side include EuroAir Taxi (tel: (0)3 8970 0282), Taxi Marti (tel: (0)3 8969 7300) and Taxis des 3 Frontières (tel: (0)3 8970 0028).

Money and communications:

• There is a bank, ATMs and a bureau de change, which is open 24 hours.

Eating and drinking:

• There is a restaurant on the fifth floor, serving both sectors; bars and snack bars are located on levels 2, 3 and 4.

Shopping:

• There are several duty-free shops in the International Terminal.

Luggage:

• There is no left-luggage service at the airport although if your luggage does get lost, as has happened to me, the airport staff will be able to tell you where you should wait to fill-out a form to report the missing luggage and, in my case, the luggage was found and taken to my house in Germany by taxi - somewhat easier than taking it there myself actually!

Conferences and Business:

• Conference rooms (tel: (0)3 8990 2511 in France and (0)613 252 511 in Switzerland) can be hired for between 1-18 and 20-50 people.
• They are equipped with television, video recorder, overhead projector and slide projector.

Facilities for the Disabled Traveller:

• Two companies, CGS and Penauille, are in charge of disabled facilities at the airport.
• They provide wheelchairs and also transport passengers to/from aircrafts in courtesy vehicles.
• Disabled toilets, lifts and specially lowered public telephones are all available.
